The Amazon Labor Union: A History of Grassroots Organizing

The Amazon Labor Union (ALU) represents a significant shift in the landscape of American labor relations. Founded on April 20, 2021, by labor activist Chris Smalls and his colleagues from The Congress of Essential Workers, the union emerged from protests regarding Amazon's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic at the JFK8 warehouse in Staten Island.

The Path to Unionization

Following the firing of Chris Smalls after he led a walkout at the JFK8 facility, the movement gained momentum. Smalls opted for a grassroots approach, distancing the effort from established unions to foster direct worker solidarity. This strategy culminated on April 1, 2022, when JFK8 workers voted to unionize, marking the first time an Amazon facility in the United States successfully formed a union recognized by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

Affiliation with the Teamsters

In June 2024, the ALU took a major step by affiliating with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. This partnership was designed to provide the ALU with greater financial resources and institutional support while maintaining its independent identity. Shortly after this affiliation, the Teamsters initiated strikes at various Amazon locations across the United States, citing the company's refusal to address worker demands.

Organizational Challenges

While the victory at JFK8 was historic, the path has not been without setbacks. An attempt to unionize a second Staten Island facility, LDJ5, failed in May 2022. Despite this, the ALU continues to serve as a beacon for labor activists globally, with workers from countries including the United Kingdom, India, and South Africa reaching out for guidance on organizing their own workplaces.
